How often should I have
my horse’s teeth floated?
Every horse's mouth is a
little different, just like people. The type of teeth your horse has will
determine how often he will need his teeth
floated.
At 5 years old, your
horse will have a mature mouth. That means he
is finished with changing
his baby teeth to adult ones. So what he has
now is what he will be
working with for the rest of his life.
Your horse would probably
benefit from having his mouth worked on
once a year. The place
for you to start is have the best equine dentist
you can find come and
give him a thorough exam. They will be able
to tell you, then, what
work may need doing and how often it will need
to be maintained.
If your horse has not had
his mouth worked on before, his first appointment will likely require the most
work. Once your dentist has his mouth in good order it is usually simpler (and
cheaper!) to keep it that way.
